16.3hh Bay Gelding, Year of birth 2012

Big Tom was imported from Ireland by Sally in February 2017.

This gorgeous Irish hunter type has all the best assets of traditional Irish breeding – a calm, amenable temperament and a fabulous work ethic coupled with great presence.

Big Tom is a solid, comfortable and dependable ride. He gives his rider a real feeling of stability and safety, and can be trusted to get on with the job and look after whoever is on board!

Since his arrival at Riding Farm, Big Tom has hunted twice with the Coakham Bloodhounds. His first meet with us was at Folkington Manor on Sunday 19th March (see pictures), with Sally in the saddle! This hunt took place over the South Downs, which, with its undulating terrain, really proved Big Tom’s surefootedness and adjustability.

Big Tom was impeccably behaved both at this meet and the next at Stidolph’s Farm on Sunday 9th April. On both occasions he stood very quietly amongst all the other horses and hounds, letting his rider have a couple of drinks and a bite to eat whilst he rested a hindleg (again, see pictures!)

Back at Riding Farm he is regularly used for total beginner lessons, which really cements his status as a laid back, easy going chap. He is a responsive yet steady ride in the arena and will also pop a small fence sweetly.

Out hunting or hacking Big Tom is reactive enough to keep up the pace on long galloping stretches, but just as quick to come back to his rider and enjoy a more leisurely stroll on a longer rein. That’s the beauty of this horse – he really does adapt and adjust accordingly to the boldness (or otherwise!) of his rider and to the job being asked of him!

Recently, Big Tom has been used weekly on Sally’s cross country sessions. He is progressing really well and in every session he is getting bolder and braver over his cross country fences. These sessions have also proven his ability to remain quiet when working in a big group of horses. Whilst the herd mentality can take over with some horses, this is certainly not the case with Big Tom, who remains as rideable as ever!

He has a lovely kind eye, which is so indicative of his gentle, peace loving nature. He would really do the job as a first horse as he is just as easy to handle in all respects, as he is under saddle.

This chap would be a great addition to any rider’s yard – he is quite simply one of the easiest horses we’ve had the pleasure of dealing with!

Big Tom is sold with a Leisure Horse Ireland passport.
